My friends you should read

If you look it up it is getting mixed reviews, mostly 5 stars but it is being compared to Sex and the City unfavorably. Liz Tucillo used to write for Sex and the City so people should expect some similarities.
She went around the world talking to singles, getting the scoop, and then instead of writing a boring and depressing non-fiction book, she gives us a touching, funny novel.
I love it and I think you will too.

Stuck in NJ

I'm a little bummed out today. Work is crazy busy and I found out that there will be a big FREE!!! launch party for Acheron Sherrilyn Kenyon's new book. Problem is the party is in Nashville, TN and I'm stuck here. Not only that but the closest the book signing tour will be coming is NYC. Close but oh so far...doubt if I can go at 7pm on a Friday night in August. The traffic to get back home (jersey shore) would suck tremendously. Every time she comes to NJ I miss her. I also missed PIP when they were in Hoboken. Not having much luck this year, hopefully that will change soon. I do have Coldplay to look forward to in Oct.

My new favorite song

For some reason this song cracks me up. I love it. Last night I saw it on the commercial for the new season of House and I was so excited. It fits House beautifully. Perfect. I had to sign up for a Youtube account so I could post it. I didn't pick the video and I couldn't find the commercial I chose bathroom toothbrush version. Enjoy!

The Host

I was so happy to get my hands on a copy of Stephanie Meyer's new book The Host. I just loved the Twilight books and am waiting impatiently for Breaking Dawn. The Host was just wonderful, I can't stop recommending it to everyone. It is appropriate for High School teens and just like the Twilght books it has so much appeal adults love it too. Check out Stephanie's page for an excerp.

Now What?

Just waiting for everyone else to finish the challenge, very impatient at this point. I could just make a new blog but that would be a pain. I am just going to be playing with all the new things I have been shown in this challenge. I might not post for a while. I'll see...

23 Things Finished

I haven't heard from OCL webthings about finishing the challenge so I went back through to check on my entries. I went back and labeled each challenge with it's number because I think that might have been the problem. Hope that was it. I know I have made a lot more posts than I needed to in order to do the challenge. I just can't help it. When everyone is finished with the challenge I will still post even if noone wants to read what I write.

Blog Surfing

Last Thursday after I finished my last Thing (yeah) I was blog surfing and hit on Digital Zen. It is someone doing the 23 Things challenge from a library in North Carolina. I tried to leave a comment about how cool that is that on my last day of the challenge I would hit on a fellow challengee. Unfortunately their comments are limited to only their team members. Too bad. Maybe I will find another someday.

Thing 23 The End

Hard to believe that the challenge is over. It has been just that-definitely a challenge. I have to say that I have enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I have found a lot of wonderful new ways to spend my time and a lot of wonderful ways to help customers.

My favorite Thing was and is this blog. I have found it to be so fun to make and maintain. I think I will keep it.
The Thing I dislike the most is the previous thing, Thing 22 ListenNj. For the reasons look at that post.
The aspects of Web 2.0 OCL should be involved with is, in my opinion, every aspect of it. All day long all we deal with is the computer...how can a library not be involved in learning on every level?

Computers are the future, barring a massive global EMP and no way to build components after one. Just by joining this challenge OCL is working toward a library that always has a place in that future. Web 3.0 will just be another challenge that OCL will face with its usual equanimity.

Thing 22 ListenNJ

I already have an account with ListenNJ. When the library first subscribed to it there was a request for everyone to try it out and so I did. We needed to know how to help people make an account. I personally don't like audio books. It drives me up the wall when the narrators use accents and goofy voices for different characters. Can't handle it. I'd much rather read a book or listen to the radio and CDs, not an audio book.
For the sake of this web challenge I have revisited my account and "borrowed" 2 books. I have downloaded them to the staff computer desktop and have found that the windows media players on our work computers need to be upgraded. None of the books will play on our computers, at any one we try it on. Not too good considering this is a challenge. Now we will have to put in a work order to have our computers updated.

edited:5/13-I forgot that it doesn't work unless you are home or on PCPlus. Worked fine on PCPlus.

Thing 21 Finding and Listening to Podcasts

Podcasts, very cool. I don't think I would ever make my own...you never know. I might end up inadvertently being in someone else's podcast. I am not likely to sign-up for a podcast feed, would have to find a subject I really wanted to see a lot. None of the search results I got on Podcast.com interested me. I also tryed Odeo.com, it is a little bit slicker looking but Podcast was easier for me to use. I like the audio and video podcasts not audio only ones. Okay I signed up to podcast.com, picked the foodtv podcast and am not figuring out how to view the podcast. Everything I click doesn't work. This will take some time. I'll have to come back later.

edited 5/10-I went back to odeo and signed up for an account. I got a odeo player and put a widget with Incubus' Dig. Ireally wanted Believe by the Bravery but they don't have it.

Thing 20 YouTube

Hooray for YouTube. I love it. I don't have an account but I am always using it, looking for concerts, tv clips, crazy kids stunts, whatever. Just last night I was watching Lost in Space the Golden Man episode on DVD with my brother and brother-in-law. We started discussing other cheesy old school sci-fi series we loved. My brother and I loved this cartoon called Star Blazers. We only saw one season of it and then we moved and couldn't find it on our new cable. Found it on YouTube right way, won't buy the DVDs 'cause it costs $150. We also loved Buck Rogers and what stood out the most was the crazy dances they always did, so cheestastic. Here is a link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeRpwJSMRlc&feature=related for a perfect analysis of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.

http://www.hulu.com/about is a new website that has entire series or movies for viewing online for free. It is not the same as YouTube, I don't think you can put your own videos on it. It is just for any movie or TV show.
Here's the link for a Buck Rogers episode from Hulu. http://www.hulu.com/watch/13071/buck-rogers-space-rockers. Ha Ha...hysterical.

My Meez

I had time to play this week since I did my Things on Saturday. So thanks to Carla http://bitsandmusings.blogspot.com/ for having a cute meez on her site. I have made myself an avatar.
Don't know if i will use it for anything else but I like it on my blog. Now I will help Ellen and Cheryl, and anyone else who wants to, make one.

Ahhhh!!!

I am being dragged deeper and deeper. http://www.pandora.com/ is the coolest site I have ever been on, I am so hooked. This is wrong.
The challenge has broken me. I am going to have to buy a home computer or a laptop. You are solely responsible for dropping the circ at my branch. There will be no time to read!

Thing 19 Web 2.0

http://www.seomoz.org/web2.0, interesting site and the awards are great. Kind of slow to open. I was just reading the award about yelp.com, the #1 for city guides and reviews, and someone came in to ask what there is to do in the area with his daughter. Ha ha. I added 3 sites immediately. How great is that?
The Content Aggregation and Management awards appear to be going to the sites that have the best tools, for programing and codeing etc., to help improve your website.

Thing 18 Web Apps

Google Docs is wonderful. I have used it before for the Virtual Branch Workgroup. It worked very well. It is extremely easy to use, definitely a lot like Microsoft Word.

http://www.zoho.com/ appears to be an incredible asset. So many applications in one place. Maybe we should have a shortcut to it on the Cybraryn computers that don't have word. This site is fabulous.

There is no doubt these Apps should be in use by all committees. What are we waiting for... if I had had any knowledge of them before, when I was on Circ & E, it would have made things much easier. Perfect for writing the newsletter. Not to mention the brochure.

Thing 17 Sandbox

I have to confess that I did my challenge backwards. I played in the sandbox yesterday. I got the email in my outlook and just started the Thing. As I said in the previous post I have already used a wiki. It really helped to have the wiki. We got our assignments and meeting dates and questions immediately instead of having to wait. We could login at our conveniece and get the job done. I loved it. It was a real treat to not have to drive all the way from LEH to were ever a meeting would be, since they are never held at LEH.

Thing 16 Wikis

I have looked at, referred to and used wikis before this challenge. The Virtual Branch group used a wiki to get our work done. Everyone was from different branches and we couldn't meet very often. The wiki was a great way to get everything done. I liked it a lot.

The Library Success wiki has a lot of content, it would be great if I was a librarian. I really don't have a use for it at this point. It is good to know it is there to refer to. So funny, as I am sitting here my coworkers are saying that on the Library Success wiki there is a wonderful reader's advisory feature that everyone should use. So I am wrong and I have yet another site that I need to keep exploring...sigh.

I am not into Wikipedia. Now that I have had the history tab pointed out and I can see the changes that have been made I might use it once in a while. I also like the discussion feature.

This is getting crazy. No matter how much you use the internet there is so much more you haven't even begun to break the surface.

Widgetbox

The new obssession of the staff is http://www.widgetbox.com/. It's hard to choose what to add to the blog.

Thank you http://gizzmosgadgets.blogspot.com/ for the direction and help.

Thing 15 Library 2.0

When I think "library" the first word I think of is books, the second word is knowledge. Any format for working the mind. Library 2.0 is a natural progression to my thinking. I read Into a New World of Librarianship and To a Temporary Place in Time. Both are excellent. Both are easy to understand and give a good definition of what libraries need-to be and remain relevant.

Thing 14 Technorati

There is a lot of stuff on this site. I said back a few posts that this Thing would help me learn how to work with Technorati. Can't say it has cleared much up. it's hard to believe this is a revamped version of Technorati. I searched the learning 2.0 and got back a lot of result's in the posts and in the blog lists. Really don't want to search through all those hits for something interesting.
I keep trying to claim my blog and technorati keeps saying there is a problem claiming my blog try again in a few minutes. I searched OCL Web Challenge and I got 3 hits, Glynis' blog and BGT YS' and OCL Webthings. I'll have to play around some more.

Thing 13 Tagging and Folksonomies and del.icio.us

Okay personally I am not very good at tagging. I like that you can collaboratively tag. Not very creative about what tag to give to something so like to "tag" along with someone else's. I like that you can just search a keyword (tag) and get all the hits you can imagine but my imagination is not that good. Way to much info to sort through unless you know exactly what you want.

Del.icio.us is just too time consuming for me. I don't have sites that I need to refer back to all the time and if I do I can just add an RSS feed now that I know how. I just don't have constant computer access for all these sites. If I am not at work I am not on the computer. I have too many other things to do, or just one thing, like read...

Monday, April 14, 2008

As usual I was wasting time going from next blog to next blog (our ocl blogs would not make much sense to anyone randomly connecting to them). Some of the blogs I have hit on are so beautiful I can't believe it. I just want to leave comments all the time but I don't even know if the people can read English. Such lovely photos and artwork and even music. Maybe when I'm done with the 23 things my blog will be half as good. Well on to the next post and the next Thing.

Thing 12 Part 2 WorldCat

Not too complicated. Searced for Adam by Ted Dekker( I just checked this book in last week). Got 415 hits for 3 editions. Used 08087 for the zip. OCL did not come up as owning this book but when I click the search my library link under Get It it goes straight to ipac and the book.
http://www.worldcat.org/wcpa/oclc/164803049?page=frame&url=http%3a%2f%2f209.212.21.134%3a8080%2fipac20%2fipac.jsp%3fsession%3dK18B961995390.26915%26menu%3dsearch%26aspect%3dsubtab13%26npp%3d30%26ipp%3d20%26spp%3d20%26profile%3dremote%26ri%3d%26index%3dISBNX%26term%3d9781595540072&title=&linktype=opacLink

For the advanced search under OC history I picked Biographical Cyclopedia of Ocean County, New Jersey. I got 2 results and I picked the one with no autor listed like it is on our catalog. It's owned by 17 libraries (from all over the US) on microform and book. Really nice to know.

Thing 12 part 1 NetLibrary

Already had an account but couldn't remember what my login was because I haven't used this resource in so long. I just made a new account and I searched for the Iliad. My results were for cliffnotes....not good. I went to advanced search and entered Homer under author and the Iliad under title. No results. No copies in the netlibrary. My next search was under keyword: fantasy.
Got a bizarre list as a result. Picked Gulliver's Travels. Definitely the right book, if I wanted to read it again.
The Netlibrary does not have enough books. It is easy to sign up for and easy to use. It is fine for certain research purposes and customers seem to be satisfied with it.

Bartleby.com, not really my kind of thing. Not into public speaking, don't use quote very often in daily conversation. Good to know it's there if need it.

Ooops!

I forgot to add a link to my LibraryThing catalog, thanks Elizabeth.

Here it is
http://www.librarything.com/catalog/y62473

I don't know why only some of the covers are not showing up in my library list. The titles will just have to be enough for now.

Thing 11

Okay, it's been a few years since I've visited LibraryThing. I can't believe how much better it is now. There are so many new aspects to the site. It's great. I wish you could add more than one book at a time. They need a back to author or back to series link. If anyone knows how give me a clue. Building my library will take a while, especially when I can't remember which editions I have. I can remember when I was about 13 trying to keep an index card for everybook I owned and losing the battle. This is too cool. Alright I can't spend all my time on LibraryThing. It will be another losing battle for me.

I did a quick tagmash with dead, librarians--here's what I got: Abhorsen by Garth Nix
Lirael, daughter of the Clayr by Garth Nix
Sabriel by Garth Nix
I'll have to check them out. ha ha

So Sorry

Didn't work on the Things yet. Worked on getting the picture I love as the background for my title. Still don't have it quite the way I want it but, oh well, good enough for now.

Things 10,11, & 12

It seems like there is no time to breathe today. So busy I couldn't get a computer until 3:00. Had to do my regular work, of course. Good thing I have had previous experience with Librarything, the Netlibrary and WorldCat. I can check them out again and do the discovery exercises another day. I've already been commenting on other blogs, they are listed in Blogs I Visit. Gotta go... closing soon

Checking in

it's nice to have time off from our things to just mess around.

starting to really love the bloglines. some of the RSS' have too many feeds, I'm going to have to try and narrow it down. BBC News over the weekend had 147 feeds, way too many with a lot of repetition.

my blog entries are kind of short. when I'm talking I'll just babble on and on but writing, not my thing. that's why I read so much. someone else is nice enough to write everything down and entertain me.

Thing 9 Technology Adding pictures

Maggie just showed Ellen how to add pictures to her post. This is my attempt to do the same thing.

This beautiful illustration is from the
Book of HoursValencia, c. 1460Vellum, 167 leaves, 150 x 100 mm. Chemise binding.Collection of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek, Netherlands.
Thought it would go nicely with my other pictures.

Yeah for technology

Syndic8

Do not try the Tags link on Syndic8. People are obnoxiously "shouting" their tags in the biggest font they can find. I can't even look at them it hurts my eyes. Not to mention it takes forever to scroll through the list. I am going to try other parts of it. The Pings one is cool. It shows you the recently viewed feeds and if you click on one it gives info about the sites and their web address.

A little slow on the uptake

Found the RSS for the OCL webthings challenge so I added it to my bloglines. It would be worse if I never noticed or someone had to point it out to me.

Thing 9 Finding feeds

Hey Jill, so cool of you to drop by. Thanks for your help.

Love the bloglines but the newsfeeds are not my thing. Feeds kind of confusing. Don't really need constant updates on any subject, but I will keep checking topics. Never know what will hit me. Technorati and Topix were both okay. The future thing on Technorati will help I'm sure.

I need to experiment more to find out ways the feeds can help at work. You are better informed for answering reference questions I guess. If nothing else you can describe how they work and help people sign up for them. OCL already has RSS set up and I know customers who love it.

Thing 8 RSS and bloglines

Okay, I had time on the scanner and scannned a picture of the Devil's mascot. Sent an email to the oclwebthings that it's done. Now I don't know how to let them know about my bloglines account. These are are my RSS picks.

Blackfriars Thing 6

Blackfriars
Blackfriars,
originally uploaded by Miss Britt.
Found this awesome photo under the tag light when cruising on Flickr. I think it's so beautiful.

Yeah

WooHoo! I successfully sent a post from Flickr. I will try to send a picture now. Too cool.

Thing 5 Flickr

This is a test post from flickr, a fancy photo sharing thing.

Thing 7 Scanned picture

I haven't been able to scan a picture yet. I can never get on the pcplus. Hopefully when I cover reference today I'll get a chance. I already have bloglines so that thing is done but I don't want to email the webchallenge team until the scanning is done.

Been addicted to clicking on the next blog link at the top of the page. Just cruising and looking at all the different blogs. Lots of really cool ones out there. So many of them are parent blogs with pictures of their kids. It's nice if your family lives far away to have access to the kids life but I think if I did it I would might viewing private. Anyway, gotta go.

Edited 3/26/08 Okay, scanned a picture of the NJ Devils mascot and sent it to the OCL webthings email account.

Flickr

This challenge is causing such a commotion. The incompatibility of Flickr and Blogger is actually easier but everyone is so confused. This is only the beginning and everyone is frustrated. It is hard to get a computer to do daily tasks because everyone is working on their challenge.
Very interesting.

7 1/2 Habits

Habit 6 Use technology to your advantage is the habit that works best for me. I like having access to answers at my finger tips. I like that if you do not know how to use an application or a program you can just search for directions to learn how to do things.

Habit 1 is the hardest for me. I never can visualize the end things can go so many ways.
